Wish is the second OP theme for the uber-popular anime series, NANA (based on the manga of the same title by Yazawa Ai). Performed by OLIVIA (real name: Olivia Lufkin), who is credited in her NANA-related works as OLIVIA inspi' REIRA (Trapnest), the song is alt-rock with definite gothic-lolita style and influence. The music video reflects this by showing OLIVIA in gothic-lolita attire rocking out to the music with her band.
The single, Wish/Starless Night, was released on October 11, 2006, peaking at #7 in the Oricon Charts, thus, making it the artist's highest-debuting single to date. The CD single includes the track, Starless Night, also used as a theme song (2nd ED) to NANA.
I have featured this artist here before with the psychedelic video, Rain, in which I gave you her brief profile. So now, instead of going over that again, let me just say a few things about her: OLIVIA has the distinction of introducing me to Jpop. I used to never bother with Japanese music before, even as I've been watching anime since I was a kid. The reason mainly is that I don't understand the language. But with the release of NANA and its subsequent adaptation into anime and live-action movie, I had a change of heart. a little pain (released on June 28, 2008 as an ED single to NANA) is certainly not the best song I've ever heard but it's a charming little song that appeals to my taste (even though there's only like two lines of English in it).OLIVIA is a poet. The lyrics to her songs are deep, elusive and just a little bit on the side of insane. Add to that her eclectic musical style that echoes hints of 80s new wave and Cyndi Lauper-esque electronica dance-pop, and it's no wonder her works are a bit inaccessible to mainstream listeners. But I like her for that as much as I like where her music is currently going.
